E-mentoring System Development using ARCS Motivational Strategies

چکیده
An e-mentoring system is an online tool that enables interactive mentoring between a mentor and a mentee, regardless of place and time differences. This paper discusses the system design of an e-mentoring system for Malaysian orphans, called MyMentorMentee.com. The design of MyMentorMentee.com is an adaptation of Keller's ARCS Motivational model and uses its motivational elements to provide an effective mentoring experience for each session. A (attention), R (relevance), C (confidence) and S (satisfaction) are the four components of the ARCS motivational model. Keller’s model provides techniques for solving the motivational problems faced by a learner during the learning process. The purpose of MyMentorMentee.com is to study how an e-mentoring system can overcome the motivational challenges faced by orphans which were identified during the preliminary study. Among these are personal issues and learning issues. The system was developed to help mentor and mentee to carry out the mentoring session using alternative (web-based) way at anytime and anywhere. The system that we have designed has 4 modules: personal profile, text messaging, mentoring schedule, and personal video chat. All modules were evaluated using quantitative and qualitative techniques.

Learner motivation and E-learning design: a multinationally validated process
A general model for motivational design of instruction is described and reviewed in terms of its application to E-learning contexts. Following a description of what is meant by E-learning environments and an overview of the four category model and design process known as the ARCS model, a variety of studies are summarized. The ARCS model is based on a synthesis of motivational concepts and a pr...
متن کاملAssessment of Learners' Motivation during Interactions with Serious Games: A Study of Some Motivational Strategies in Food-Force
This study investigated motivational strategies and the assessment of learners‟ motivation during serious game play. Identifying and intelligently assessing the effects that these strategies may have on learners are particularly relevance for educational computer-based systems. We proposed, therefore, the use of physiological sensors, namely heart rate, skin conductance, and electroencephalogra...
متن کاملThe Effects of Arcs-strategies on Self-regulated Learning with Instructional Texts
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a motivationally designed instructional text on motivation and learning. The foundation for motivational design was provided by the combination of a model of motivation in self-regulated learning and the ARCS-approach. The model of motivation is based on concepts like expectancies, incentives, and action control. The ARCS-approach included...
متن کاملAssessing Motivational Strategies in Serious Games Using Hidden Markov Models
Recent research has extended tutor strategies to model not just interventions to offer information and activities, but also interventions to support learners’ wills and motivation. It is important to investigate new ways, intertwined with learners’ performance (successful completion of tasks) and judgement (self-report questionnaires), for evaluating tutor intervention strategies. One promising...
